5 minute gesture with prisma marker

Mike Mignola attempt, unfortunately didn't have time to throw in the most important areas of interest like the face, hands, and feet. A Few collegues at Avalanche. The page of all the figures were 2-3 minute gestures at the Wednsday night drawing session, some little kids, and some scary horrifying animals

Color and brush stroke study

I tried to approach this digital painting as traditionally or painterly as possible, using painter. It still has a digital feel but it's progress.

Ceramics Revival

I've come to grips with the fact that ceramics will always be apart of me and it is an art form I cannot afford to forsake. This summer Josh Black's Pot shop is back in business!

Cartoons

So I'm hoping that even though I'm taking a more traditional route with willustration I can still squeeze in cartoons to help develop a stronger sensitivity to design and story. Jake my twin brother was feeling very self conscious about a small blemish on his cheek and it inspired me to do this sketch.

Quick and Dirty

So I've decided that from now on I'm going to do one digital painting a day! Even if they are just quick and dirty thumbnails. It's a big goal but it must be done. With each painting I hope to learn at least one thing about color, composition, and value. It has begun!

Family Vacation

Last Fourth of July weekend we spent together as a family up at Jackson Hole Wyoming. We had a lot of fun hiking, fishing, site seeing, rafting, watching fire works, lounging at the pool, and eating Bubba's world famous barbeque. I took quite a few snap shots of my adorable nieces and nephews who tagged along with us in our outdoor adventures.

This is Cassi! She's a spaz!

This is my eldest brother Doug.

Random old dude who wanted our fish...

My Dad and little Cassi enjoying refreshing beverages
Another random old fisherman who unfortunately ditched his cuban cigar before I took this snap shot of him. Obviously he noticed...

Gotta Get Better

Lately I've been studying loomis and other masters to expand my knowledge of anatomy. It's something I should have taken more seriously a long time ago but with 3 years more of schooling I think I'll have time to repent.

Friday Open Session

Friday open drawing session and some doodles from work! So I've decided to transfer over to the illustration program this week and I'm trying to put together a portfolio for the application. I would love to do gallery work and live action concept so I feel it's a good move for me. This doesn't mean that I wont continue pushing other directions it's just what I truly have a passion for.

Some Class work

Here's a painting in progress of a design I did for my contemporary take on Hanzle and Griddle. (Sorry for the poor spelling!) She's a homeless witch that loiters practically all day and night at central park. She lures small children (mostly orphans) to her by giving out free candy to them from her vending cart that she pushes with her from place to place. Then when the orphans are the adequete size she snatches them and briefly satisifies her insatiable hunger for human flesh. It's hopefully going to be finished soon with textures and color. The latter designs are caricatures of myself as a football jock. I always get teased for my amazing physique so I figure why not play along.

Painting Assignment

Value exercise for Sam's class. Work in progress. Mostly putting it up to use my blog as a replacement for my busted external hard drive. P.S. actual design not my own it's a modern cartoon design done by Ben Balisteri . This later version I did after watching Tom one of the great artist up here at Avalanche.

The living dead of Scottland

Tuesday, September 2, 2008

This is my nephew Mason and his beautiful sister Lauren nick named La La. We went to Disneyland as a family for Labor Day weekend and had a great time. My little neice Ava who's pushing 4 was absolutely beside herself. It was her first time at the park and she did not run out of energy. I the faded drawing of Lauren's face framing Mason's head it was an accident but a happy one I think.

Ghosts in the Darkness...SCARY!! This was another value/arcitectual study. I played around with the atmospheric perspective and the overall mood by darkening and boosting the contrast considerably to get that eerie feeling seen in some of those late 19th century landscapes done in black and white. Here's two variations and a colorversion in progress let me know which one you like better

Another Value study. Man do I need to paint more

Sunday, July 20, 2008

For our lunch breaks a group of us concept guys take a half hour to an hour to do these quick digital black and white value studies. It's a relaxing exercise which is ideal right after eating a big meal.

Saturday, July 19, 2008

A painting I did for a value study. I played around with the photoshop filter options and learned some new tricks. I must add due to a recent accusation(made from Steve Glouser) that I did not draw over the referenced image. I started from general shapes to specific until I had something that resembled the picture. Geeeeesh...

Saturday, July 12, 2008

Today I went to the zoo with my good friend Jason Kim. It was a lot of fun even though the place was packed and the heat felt like burning.

Monkey Design for our group story board that takes place in Africa.

I added a little bit of atmospheric perspective on this one mostly to help unify the cool and warm color shapes.

So this is a truck i observed and drew that was parked just outside the wilkinson center. It's nice to have a still subject once and a while.

Modern Arab cartoon Baby Yeah!

Redo of Bonosour

Study of the night. At night the colors became desaturated alot more than I thought. Even the most seemingly intense, saturated colors in the pallet are far from the purest hue. 3 out of 10...

Yeah I know it looks like I just took a photo and tried to pull a fast one on old Ryan. No!! I painted it really and then added the texture to make it look more painterly.
