Ruan Jia Speed Painting

Ruan Jia an artist I discovered on CGhub. Really liked the emotion on this piece and the abstract use of color. This sloppy copy took about 2 hours, but I learned a lot from the exercise.

Quick and Dirty

So I've decided that from now on I'm going to do one digital painting a day! Even if they are just quick and dirty thumbnails. It's a big goal but it must be done. With each painting I hope to learn at least one thing about color, composition, and value. It has begun!

Gotta Get Better

Lately I've been studying loomis and other masters to expand my knowledge of anatomy. It's something I should have taken more seriously a long time ago but with 3 years more of schooling I think I'll have time to repent.

Study of a woman's face

This started out as a simple pencil drawing in my sketch book and got a little more love in photoshop. It was a good study but study none the less.

Line Studies

Studying line weight and variation. These were some fun quick drawings done in my sketch book. So I have a new blog site now which hopefully only has some of my more professional work it's joshuahunterblack.blogspot.com.

Live Action Design

Designs for Ryan's class the theme was Mad Max! What could be better?

Painting Assignment

Value exercise for Sam's class. Work in progress. Mostly putting it up to use my blog as a replacement for my busted external hard drive. P.S. actual design not my own it's a modern cartoon design done by Ben Balisteri . This later version I did after watching Tom one of the great artist up here at Avalanche.

This is my nephew Mason and his beautiful sister Lauren nick named La La. We went to Disneyland as a family for Labor Day weekend and had a great time. My little neice Ava who's pushing 4 was absolutely beside herself. It was her first time at the park and she did not run out of energy. I the faded drawing of Lauren's face framing Mason's head it was an accident but a happy one I think.

Ghosts in the Darkness...SCARY!! This was another value/arcitectual study. I played around with the atmospheric perspective and the overall mood by darkening and boosting the contrast considerably to get that eerie feeling seen in some of those late 19th century landscapes done in black and white. Here's two variations and a colorversion in progress let me know which one you like better

Another Value study. Man do I need to paint more
